![]() None came alive or even mattered to me - even the main character was dull and her driving trait was one of being spoilt - which is strange for a previous warrior. The other problem was with characterisation. ![]() There was a slight improvement later on in the imagination - but very slight. ![]() In the shattered lands, nothing grabbed me in the first 100 pages. Good examples are Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Franz Kafka and Isabel Allende. Usually, I read the first sentence (or paragraph) of a book - and if it captures me I buy/read it. By page 100 very little has happened in this fantasy world - and it becomes tiresome. However, the expressed imagination is really weak for a fantasy novel. So not as beautifully written as Tolkien writes but OK for a younger audience. The flow, the use of English, and the sentence construction are fine for a first book - and as expected as she is an English graduate. I received the paperback - which was robust and easy to read.īrenna Nation’s writing style is competent but not great. ![]()
